Speeding Into Climate Crisis--Duke Energy

URGE NC UTILITIES COMMISSIONERS to deny Duke Energy’s application to build two coal-fired power plants. Energy efficiency must be considered BEFORE approval of dirty, costly new power plants.

SEND A SHORT MESSAGE to Commission Chair: Jo Ann Sanford, sanford@ncuc.net.

Speeding Into a Climate Crisis – Duke Energy Hits the Gas

What: Evidentiary hearing on Duke Energy’s proposal to build two new 800 MW coal-fired plants at its Cliffside site in Rutherford County west of Charlotte.

When: The hearing starts Tuesday, September 12, 9am; is expected to continue several days.

Where: NC Utilities Commission, Hearing Room 2115, 430 North Salisbury St., Raleigh

Why It’s Important: The big question for North Carolina in the face of the global warming crisis is whether the state will choose to implement an aggressive program of energy efficiency and renewable energy, or will it go along with the utilities’ plans of building new coal and nuclear plants regardless of their dangers to the public and the climate and increased costs to ratepayers.

Dr. William Schlesinger, Dean of Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, and Dr. John O. Blackburn, Emeritus Professor of Economics at Duke and former Economics Department Chair and Chancellor are scheduled to testify on Thursday afternoon for NC WARN.

Duke CEO Jim Rogers will be cross examined Tuesday on the discrepancy between the public stands he has taken touting the need for energy efficiency and action on global warming and the corporation’s opposition to energy efficiency proposals as well as the greatly increased greenhouse emissions of the new power plants.
