A look at the film...

"The Business of Being Born" is about the choices that are available to families as they welcome their new members into the world. Compared to the details women often focus on when planning a wedding or party, often times the birthing process is accepted "as is" without any idea of alternatives. This film is a good starting point for families who want to learn more. The film delves into alternative births with midwives and home births as well as hospital births in America, and includes footage of on-screen births.

Sustainable Sandhills is also working with multiple partner businesses to bring a special Sustainable Moms event to Fayetteville. The event will showcase the new film "More Business of Being Born" and will also include a panel discussion by local, leading businesses focusing on midwifery, doula services, and green baby products and services. We will update you with information soon.

City of Fayetteville Sustainability Master Plan Adopted!

The City of Fayetteville’s Environmental Services Department, with help from their consultant Greenworks Partners and Sustainable Sandhills, engaged key citizens and stakeholders in creating a comprehensive and visionary Sustainability Master Plan to guide the City’s efforts over the coming years. The plan was adopted – UNANIMOUSLY – by the City Council on October 12, 2009!

The final and adopted Sustainability Master Plan can be downloaded from the city’s website. The Master Plan includes a set of seven Guiding Principles:

1. Promote national energy independence, reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a healthier environment.
2. Increase competitiveness and produce economic benefits.
3. Promote regional cooperation.
4. Preserve neighborhoods and maintain housing affordability.
5. Develop healthier communities and social equity.
6. Lead by example.
7. Utilize performance metrics and ensure accountability.

The Master Plan is organized into 4 sections, each with its own specific goals and a list of current efforts and future proposed efforts.

1. Environment and Natural Resources Air, climate, energy, water, solid waste
2. Planning Green buildings, land use & open space
3. Community Health, economic development, social equity, education
4. City Agencies (internal operations) City and Public Works Commission facilities & operations

The Master Plan will further the Greater Fayetteville Futures II vision of the Greater Fayetteville community becoming one of the top 10 places to live in the Southeast.

Congratulations to City staff (especially the City’s Environmental Services Department), Liz Burdock from Greenworks Partners, the residents and stakeholders whose input created the Master Plan, and to the City Council for adopting this plan.

Getting Smarter in Fayetteville

[from Sustainable Sandhills]

Last night the Fayetteville City Council approved a motion to implement a residential curbside recycling program on July 1, 2008. The program will be operated as an enterprise fund, and be funded by a fee to city residents that will not exceed $39/year/household. That motion passed unanimously, 9-0!

http://www.fayobserver.com/article?id=264463

The early target for the program is annual recovery of 6,000-7,000 tons of this increasingly valuable (and job-generating) resource.

Karl Marx in Fayetteville

The Gilbert Theater is pleased to present
Marx in Soho
Marx in Soho is a one character play, written by renowned people’s historian Howard Zinn, which combines hard-hitting information with humor, sharp politics and sheer delight.
Marx in Soho won the 2000 Independent Publisher Award for best visionary fiction.
Directed by Marcela Casals
Produced and performed by Fenton Wilkinson
Howard Zinn brings Karl Marx back to life to address a contemporary audience in Soho in this witty and insightful “play on history.” Marx has agitated with the authorities of the afterlife for a chance to clear his name. Through a bureaucratic error, however, Marx is sent to Soho in New York, rather than his old stomping ground in London, to make his case.
Zinn introduces us to Marx's wife, Jenny, his children, the anarchist Mikhail Bakunin,
and a host of other characters.
Marx in Soho is a brilliant introduction to Marx's life, his analysis for society,
and his passion for radical change — and the relevance of Marx's ideas for today.
May 4th, 5th, 11th & 12th at 8:00 p.m.
May 6th & 13th at 2:00 & 8:00 p.m.
