Honey the Old-fashioned Way
Natural Beekeeping Workshops
Become a natural beekeeper and begin the process of certification by participating in a workshop offered by Certified Naturally Grown! Set your honey apart without using the word organic on your honey labels! Join nearly 700 farmers from 48 states that use the Certified Naturally Grown label for their produce or livestock! Get advice on natural beekeeping methods. Exchange ideas and discover ways to transition your operation to a natural, chemical free operation without losing all your hives!
Register and attend a Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) workshop in your region in North
Carolina to learn about the Basic Honey Bee Management and Certification Standards.
The first workshop will be offered in January or February 2010 in each of the NCSBA regions (mountains, piedmont, and coast).
Registration is $10. Enrollment will be limited to 100 beekeepers per region who are certified beekeepers or have equivalent beekeeping experience. The second (also single day) workshop will be made available to those beekeepers that attend the first workshop at no additional cost to them. The second workshop is planned for the summer, once honey has been harvested but before pests become an overwhelming problem.
Each workshop will consist of 3 hours of lecture and 2 hours of demonstrations and
small group discussions. Each will be held on a Saturday in your region. You need to
attend both workshops (the one in January/February and the one in the summer) in
order to understand the program fully.

Moore County Beekeepers, Nov. 10
The November meeting of the Moore County Beekeepers Association will be held on Tuesday, November 10th at 7pm at the Moore County Agricultural Center in Carthage.
Dr. David Tarpy will be the guest speaker and will provide an overview of recent research findings in honeybee science. Association will also elect new officers for 2010.

On Saturday, October 24th at 8pm on Planet Green TV (channel 115 on Time Warner cable), will be a program called "The Last Beekeeper". It deals with the problem of the decline of honeybees.

Moore County Beekeepers, Aug. 11
The August meeting of the Moore County Beekeepers Association will be held on Tuesday, August 11th at 7pm in the Moore County Agricultural Center in Carthage. The program will be "Bees in Cartoons", presented by Hugh Madison.
Our fall field day will be a trip to the Honeybee exhibit at the NC Zoo, Saturday August 15th. Meet at the entrance to the North American exhibit at 9am.

Pollinator Week, June 27, Pittsboro
Come join the Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association for the third annual celebration of National Pollinator Week on Saturday, June 27, from 10:00 am til 2:00 pm on The Lawn at Chatham Mills in Pittsboro, NC.
The purpose of National Pollinator Week is to teach pollinator-friendly practices and raise public awareness of the importance of the bees, beetles, butterflies, moths, flies, birds, and bats that are needed to produce 80 percent of our flowering plants and one third of our human food crops. The National Academy of Sciences has reported that there is direct evidence of the decline of some pollinator species in North America. And, recently, Colony Collapse Disorder of honey bees has alarmed the agricultural industry.
We have a great program planned for folks of all ages at our local event here in Pittsboro:
You can hear presentations about beekeeping – how to get started, equipment needs, management tips – from local beekeepers.
Tour Cooperative Extension’s new Pollinator Garden at Chatham Mills and learn how to attract and protect pollinators.
Watch expert beekeepers work an actual hive inside a bee cage (bees inside, participants outside!), see honey bees up close and personal, and get your burning beekeeping questions answered.
Participate in a pollinator-themed Scavenger Hunt for kids!
Watch “Bee TV” - park yourself in front of an observation hive and watch the worker bees attending the queen. It’s mesmerizing!
Meet our local Chatham County beekeepers and learn all about what it takes to produce the nutritious and delicious local honey available at Chatham Marketplace. We will have beekeeping equipment and products from the hive for “show and tell”.
Visit Chatham Marketplace to learn which products depend on bees for pollination (hint: look for the bee signs!).
Pick up some educational literature to further your knowledge about honey bees, beekeeping, pollinators, and pollinator conservation.
Learn about the Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association and how you can get involved with this fabulously friendly group through monthly meetings and field days and even an email listserv – we welcome members of all skill levels: from never-tried-it (but always wanted to) to beginner to experienced!

Moore County Beekeepers, May 12

This will be our "Who wants to bee a Millionaire" session. During our business meeting, Kevin, Rick, and Dwight will report on suggestions for our website design.
We will also need an accurate headcount for our picnic in June, so if you are unable to attend tomorrow's meeting, but will attend the picnic, contact Debbie Tyner at rdtyner@embarqmail.com or 295-3639. Remember that the picnic is on June 9th at Cannon Park in Pinehurst and starts at 6:30 instead of 7:00pm. We would like to have enough food for all attending without overbuying.

Local Honey for NC State Fair
North Carolina State Fair 2009 Honey Sales
Last year the NCSBA (NC State Beekeepers Association) honey sales booth at the state fair was a resounding success thanks in no small part to the efforts of Don Hopkins, Danny Jaynes and their group of dedicated volunteers. Approximately 3,300 pounds of honey were sold, generating over $22,000 and yielding a profit in excess of $8,000.
This year there have been a few suggestions to make the booth even more interesting for our state members and hopefully generate even higher sales volume and awareness of beekeeping in North Carolina. A current recommendation is to purchase up to two sixty-pound pails of honey from any NCSBA member at a price of $200 per pail.
The plan is to promote regional - local - honey for sale on specific days by having NCSBA members from that region man the fair booth on the days a specific local honey is featured. Last year several people asked for honey from their home region and were disappointed that the products couldn't be identified by region. Members representing their regions may find new sales opportunities in their area, as well as increasing the public's awareness of the NCSBA.

Beekeepers' Meet, April 14, Carthage
The April meeting of the Moore County Beekeepers Association will be held on April 14th at 7pm in the Moore County Agricultural Center in Carthage. Ellis Hardison, NC Master Beekeeper, will discuss "Tasmania/Apimondia". During our business meeting, Rick McAuley will discuss options available if we wish to have a club website.
